Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony

Our 13th annual Longwood Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony on May 31, 2021, was extra-special this year. Longwood Junior HS eighth grade student-researcher Carlie Preudhomme and Gordon Heights Civic Association President E. James Freeman unveiled the newly added name of Albert J. Freeman, a Civil War soldier who served in the US Colored Troops from 1863-1864. Carlie’s research proved that Albert was born in Middle Island in 1840 and served honorably with his Union unit before succumbing to Yellow Fever and dying at Fort Jackson, LA. As Carlie explained, “We can’t bring Albert Freeman’s body home. But we can bring his name home.” And we did!
