Fire Commissioner & Budget Vote Tuesday, 12/11

As covered in today’s Newsday…

Fire districts are independent public taxing agencies, and their commissioners are responsible for drafting district budgets, determining fire protection policies, and buying equipment.  The districts raise operating funds mostly through property taxes.  Residents do not vote for budgets as they do in school district elections; the fire district budget was adopted by the board of commissioners last month.

Middle Island fire district adopted a $3.29 million budget, which is a 3.7% decrease from the current budget.  Anthony Rempel is running unopposed.  [Mr. Rempel is running for a term of five years, commencing on January 1, 2013 upon the expiration of the term of Jeffrey Davis, who resigned in 2012.]

Voting is at the MIFD headquarters on Arnold Drive tomorrow, December 11th, from 3:00pm to 9:00pm.
