Councilwoman Connie Kepert attended the Middle Island Civic Association Meeting on March 15, 2012 where she spoke about some of the projects and improvements she has been working on in the community. In her presentation, the Councilwoman announced that the construction of the roundabout on Whiskey Road is expected to start the week of the March 26, and should be completed by the end of the summer. The roundabout is being constructed in response to several accidents which occurred at the intersection of Miller Place Yaphank Road and Whiskey Road, one of which involved a fatality. Roundabouts are safer than signal-controlled intersections and substantially reduce the incidence of crashes because they slow the flow of vehicles and eliminate right-angle collisions.

Councilwoman Kepert updated the Civic on the progress of the Bartlett Pond Park, a project which Middle Island Civic Association’s Gail Lynch-Bailey has been working hard on. Park improvements include the removal of invasive species, refurbishment of the historical schoolhouse, and the planting of a community garden. All are hopeful that needed renovations will occur prior to the dedication ceremony for the memorials which will take place at Bartlett Pond Park on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at 11am. The erection of the Longwood Veterans’ Walk monuments honoring hometown heroes, were funded by grant money obtained by the Councilwoman from the Caithness project.

Councilwoman Kepert also spoke about several town wide initiatives which she sponsored including the Sign Code amendment and a resolution which she sponsored to convert from plastic to paper bags for the Town of Brookhaven yard waste collection.
