{"id":883,"date":"2011-06-15T16:44:21","date_gmt":"2011-06-15T16:44:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/middleislandcivic.com\/?p=883"},"modified":"2011-06-15T16:44:21","modified_gmt":"2011-06-15T16:44:21","slug":"progress-for-k-mart-site","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/s453969799.onlinehome.us\/mica\/?p=883","title":{"rendered":"Progress for K-Mart Site!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"headbar\">\n<div>\n<h1>Town Board approves change of zone for Artist Lake Plaza<\/h1>\n<p>From <em><strong>The North Shore Sun <\/strong><\/em>By <a title=\"Posts by Jennifer Gustavson\" href=\"http:\/\/northshoresun.timesreview.com\/author\/jgustavson\/\">Jennifer Gustavson<\/a> | June 15, 2011 in <a title=\"View all posts in News\" rel=\"category tag\" href=\"http:\/\/northshoresun.timesreview.com\/category\/news\/\">News<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The Brookhaven Town Board unanimously approved a change of zone  request Tuesday for Artist Lake Plaza, a controversial redevelopment  project for the former K-Mart property in Middle Island.<\/p>\n<p>Environmentalists have been opposed to the project because they  believe it will negatively impact the health of the Carmans River, whose  headwaters are in Middle Island.<\/p>\n<p>The project has been halted since last October after Brookhaven Town  Supervisor Mark Lesko announced the formation of a study group to up  come with a watershed management plan for the Carmans River. That  report, which shows Artist Lake Plaza is outside the watershed, is in  the process of being finalized.<\/p>\n<p>The 74-acre project from developer Wilbur Breslin includes two anchor stores and a youth sports complex.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth District Councilwoman Connie Kepert, who represents the area, said she\u2019s excited about the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe building of a commercial center and ballfields will begin the  reinvigoration of the Middle Island community and fulfill for a  commercial and recreation center at this site,\u201d Ms. Kepert said in a  statement.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Breslin is expected to submit a site plan to the town\u2019s Planning Board for approval, town officials said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:jennifer@northshoresun.com\" target=\"_blank\">jennifer@northshoresun.com<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Town Board approves change of zone for Artist Lake Plaza From The North Shore Sun By Jennifer Gustavson | June 15, 2011 in News The Brookhaven Town Board unanimously approved a change of zone request Tuesday for Artist Lake Plaza, a controversial redevelopment project for the former K-Mart property in Middle Island.
