MINUTES of the February 18, 2010 MICA Meeting – Longwood Public Library, 7:00 p.m.
\nOfficers in Attendance:\u00a0 Second Vice President Betsey Martinez, Secretary Gail Lynch-Bailey, Membership Chair Margaret Malloy, Treasurer Larry Mazza; Those Who Signed In: Frank Bailey, Jack Stinton, Harold Bachmann, Fred Steinmann, Irene Steinmann, Edith Lilie, Harold Lilie;\u00a0 Also in Attendance: Lea Van Lane, Hazel Roberts, Dennis Meehan, David Ferrara<\/p>\n
I.The meeting was Called to Order<\/span> at 7:10 p.m. & the Pledge of Allegiance<\/span> was recited.<\/p>\n II. Program<\/span>: Q & A w\/Suffolk County Police 7th<\/sup> Precinct Inspector David Ferrara and 6th<\/sup> Precinct Deputy Inspector Dennis Meehan – Rte 21 (Rocky Point-Yaphank Road) divides MI into two precincts.\u00a0 Overall crime statistics are down, but slight increase in residential burglaries and petit larcenies.\u00a0 Best advice: lock your cars and keep all tempting electronic items out of view or easy access.\u00a0 The growing heroin epidemic among young people was noted.\u00a0 And yes, you CAN get a ticket for driving while cell-phone impaired!\u00a0 Open community meetings are a regular event at both precincts, with seasonal ones at the 6th and monthly ones at the 7th.\u00a0 SCPD also offers a citizens\u2019 police academy and ride-alongs. The January meeting minutes<\/span> were approved as written.<\/p>\n IV. Treasurer\u2019s Report<\/span>: $3190.79 in savings; $492.33 in checking<\/p>\n V. Correspondence<\/span>: IGHL Notice for Christina Lane- question on exact location for MIFD; Marc Alessi\u2019s Child Safety Fair on Feb 25th<\/sup>; so many SC items- inquire about paperless notification? TOB Supervisor Lesko\u2019s \u201cDown Off the Hill\u201d District 4 meeting Feb. 23 at Coram FD<\/p>\n <\/em><\/p>\n VI. Reports of Committees & Officers<\/span><\/p>\n Membership: 46 members in good standing, up by 5!<\/p>\n Long Island Lobby Coalition \u2013 Lobby Day in Albany on Feb 9th<\/sup> attended by Tom Talbot<\/p>\n MI Schoolhouse \u2013 interior restoration ongoing\/ open for June 19th<\/sup> Vets celebration at Bartlett Pond Park<\/p>\n ABCO – \u201c2030\u201d questions at Feb meeting, officer elections on March 15th<\/sup><\/p>\n MI Post Office \u2013 local exterior box removed, still one inside post office for 11953 mail<\/p>\n Longwood Library – adjacent property purchased thru reserves, no taxpayer impact<\/p>\n VII. Unfinished Business<\/span><\/p>\n Feb 9th<\/sup> special election for NYS 3rd<\/sup> Assembly District- Dean Murray winner<\/p>\n Gordon Heights Fire District – TOB hired consultant prior to mandated public hearing<\/p>\n Longwood CSD: Feb 6th<\/sup> Legislative Breakfast; March 4th<\/sup> Drug Awareness Forum, 7pm, LMS<\/p>\n Ben\u2019s Paints \u2013 postponed again at BZA\u2013 very frustrating<\/p>\n VIII. New Business<\/span><\/p>\n Election of Nominating Committee: Frank Bailey, Jack Stinton & Lea Van Lane<\/p>\n Distribution of Nominating Forms \u2013 given out, suggestion to mail to all members due to light attendance<\/p>\n Purchase of flag in MICA\u2019s name at Heritage Park- approved unanimously<\/p>\n Proper flag disposal- the Lilies have a collection box for used US flags at their store<\/p>\n Great Brookhaven Cleanup on April 17th<\/sup> – site suggestions for MICA participation, decide in March<\/p>\n Mailing to MI residents to recruit MICA members? \u2013general support, need more info and costs<\/p>\n Hospitality Committee formation: Lea Van Lane and Margaret Malloy volunteered for this<\/p>\n IX.
