{"id":3014,"date":"2018-10-08T23:23:12","date_gmt":"2018-10-08T23:23:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/s453969799.onlinehome.us\/mica\/?p=3014"},"modified":"2018-10-08T23:51:12","modified_gmt":"2018-10-08T23:51:12","slug":"mica-holds-strathmore-commons-task-force-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/s453969799.onlinehome.us\/mica\/?p=3014","title":{"rendered":"MICA Holds Strathmore Commons Task Force Meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following a series of probably related robberies and at the request of the owner, the Middle Island Civic Association established a Task Force for the Strathmore Commons (King Kullen) Shopping Center.\u00a0 We held our first meeting on September 25.\u00a0 In attendance were Island Associates\u2019 Roger Delisle and Robert Monaghan, Heather Saladino of Golds Gym, Kristen Kranjc of All Island Pets, SCPD 7<sup>th<\/sup> Precinct COPE Officer Michael Casper and Executive Officer Eric D\u2019Agostino, Councilman Mike Loguercio and Victoria Molloy, Leg, Sarah Anker and Mari Pryor, and MICA Officers Margaret Malloy, Barbara Shirreffs and Gail Lynch-Bailey.\u00a0 We agreed on a number of tasks, listed below, several of which have been started.\u00a0 Chief among these was the visit to the growing homeless camp in the front part of the center, just west of\u00a0 the McDonalds in the pine trees.\u00a0 SCPD contacted DSS and they jointly visited the camp, offering services and warning folks that they are trespassing.\u00a0 Owner Roger Delisle had the pine trees limbed up, eliminating the hiding area the homeless were using.\u00a0 The camp is now gone. \u00a0There is overnight private security and additional private undercover surveillance underway, as well as increased SC police presence there and patrol checks of the Preserve neighborhood and Wading River Hollow Rd.\u00a0 If you see a cop doing paperwork in a patrol car there, don\u2019t complain \u2013 we want that! Please continue to report problems of aggressive panhandling and seemingly unsafe individuals to the police, elected official and the civic.\u00a0 NEVER give money to these people \u2013 you may make yourself feel good for the moment, but you are continuing the problem.\u00a0 Contribute to reputable food banks, clothing drives and reliable charities instead.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">SC 7<sup>th<\/sup> Precinct<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>When appropriate, update community on\u00a0 investigation of multiple robberies<\/p>\n<p>Offer outreach to homeless there\u00a0 asap \u2013 7th Precinct to contact DSS veterans expert Bill Palumbo<\/p>\n<p>Increase police presence at shopping center via regular patrol checks per tour, have officers complete paperwork in parking lot for additional presence, ask CSU to visit, too<\/p>\n<p>Expand patrol checks to \u201cThe Preserve\u201d neighborhood and Wading River Hollow Rd<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Not discussed but definitely consider:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>Hold a \u201cCoffee with a Cop\u201d session at Gold\u2019s Gym \u2013 maybe a \u201cProtein Shake with a Cop\u201d ?<\/p>\n<p>Consider a monthly COPE event there, like the ones done\u00a0 at Sky Zone in Mt Sinai w\/6th Precinct<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Island Associates and Tenants<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Limb up pine trees in front parcel near Woodville Road to prevent homeless gathering there<\/p>\n<p>Remove shopping carts and debris left by homeless<\/p>\n<p>Report observations of drug dealing to 631-652-NARC each and every time, with times, cars, plates, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Execute affidavits of trespass every time it is warranted to remove\u00a0 unwanted individuals<\/p>\n<p>Consider a Neighborhood Watch program for business operators in center using a Group Me app; civic\u2019s Watch Captains can advise on this; take photos when safe to do so to forward to police<\/p>\n<p>Increase signage about video surveillance, no loitering, and concern for shoppers\u2019 safety<\/p>\n<p>Continue overnight private security and additional private undercover surveillance; forward info to police<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MI Civic Association<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Promote\/participate in Oct 21 Bartktoberfest and future community events at shopping center<\/p>\n<p>Develop a safe\/responsible shoppers guide to discourage people from giving money\/goods to panhandlers\u00a0 \u2013 a simple business card would work, with outreach numbers and local charities listed<\/p>\n<p>Update community on recent meeting, action steps; promote local shopping; work on signage at entrances<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Leg Anker<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Investigate Operation SHIELD to link cameras from center to police<\/p>\n<p>Continue monitoring for homeless camps; promote\/attend local business events<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Councilman Loguercio<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Investigate increased lighting along Rt 25 \u2013 NY DOT road, but TOB may have jurisdiction<\/p>\n<p>Continue monitoring for homeless camps;
