{"id":3002,"date":"2018-09-17T14:25:53","date_gmt":"2018-09-17T14:25:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/s453969799.onlinehome.us\/mica\/?p=3002"},"modified":"2018-09-17T14:25:53","modified_gmt":"2018-09-17T14:25:53","slug":"second-hab-in-middle-island-waters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/s453969799.onlinehome.us\/mica\/?p=3002","title":{"rendered":"Second HAB in Middle Island Waters"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Middle Island&#8217;s Spring Lake has been diagnosed with a HAB, harmful algae bloom, of cyanobacteria or blue-green algae.\u00a0 This is the third year in a row for Spring Lake.\u00a0 The HAB in Artist Lake is also still present, according to the NYS DEC.\u00a0 As noted below, officials ask residents not to use, swim or wade in these waters, and to keep children and pets away from the area.<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:<\/p>\n<p>September 14, 2018<\/p>\n<p>Contact: Grace Kelly-McGovern<i>,<\/i><\/p>\n<p>631-854-0095- or 631-219-9592<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><b>New Cyanobacteria Blooms found in Marion Lake in East Marion and Spring Lake in Middle Island<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has confirmed the emergence of new cyanobacteria blooms, more commonly known as blue\u2013green algae, in Marion Lake in East Marion and Spring Lake in Middle Island.\u00a0 In addition, cyanobacteria blooms have re-emerged in Maratooka Lake in Mattituck.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, cyanobacteria blooms are also still present at the following locations:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Agawam Lake, Southampton<\/li>\n<li>Artist Lake, Middle Island<\/li>\n<li>Babylon Town Hall Pond<\/li>\n<li>Coopers Neck Pond, Southampton<\/li>\n<li>Lake Ronkonkoma<\/li>\n<li>Little Fresh Pond, Southampton<\/li>\n<li>Mill Pond, Watermill<\/li>\n<li>Roth Pond (SUNY Stony Brook Campus)<\/li>\n<li>South Merritts Pond, Riverhead<\/li>\n<li>Wickapogue Pond, Southampton<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Due to these findings, health officials ask residents not to use or swim or wade in these waters and to keep their pets and children away from the area.<\/p>\n<p>Though blue-green algae are naturally present in lakes and streams in low numbers, they can become abundant, forming blooms in shades of green, blue-green, yellow, brown or red. They may produce floating scums on the surface of the water or may cause the water to take on paint-like appearance.<\/p>\n<p>Contact with waters that appear scummy or discolored should be avoided.
