Do You Know\u2026<\/strong>that<\/strong> <\/strong>Suffolk<\/strong> County<\/strong> Law 41-2007<\/strong> prohibits fertilizer applications<\/strong> to lawns<\/strong> between November 1st<\/sup> and April 1st?<\/strong> <\/strong> Violators may be fined up to $1,000. This law was passed to reduce nitrogen pollution in our groundwater and surface waters caused by improper lawn fertilization.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

On Long Island, we depend on our groundwater for drinking water.\u00a0 But the nitrogen fertilizer we apply to our lawns \u2013 especially when the grass is dormant \u2013 can move down through the soil and pollute our aquifer.\u00a0 Visit the Suffolk County Healthy Lawns \u2013 Clean Water website at: http:\/\/suffolkcountyny.gov\/healthylawns<\/a>.\u00a0 It will help you manage your lawn and fertilizer usage to protect our groundwater \u2013 as well as our surface water bodies \u2013 from pollution due to lawn fertilizers, while still maintaining a healthy lawn.<\/p>\n
